VENKATA SUSHMA CHAMARTHI, MD, FAAP, DABOM – Childhood Nutrition and Obesity Prevention Committee Chair

Dr. V. Sushma Chamarthi is a pediatrician and Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) with more than 15 years of clinical experience, including eight years serving children and families in California’s Central Valley. Practicing at Valley Children’s Healthcare in Fresno, she is a strong advocate for underserved and rural communities, where she focuses on the early recognition, prevention, and treatment of childhood obesity to reduce long-term comorbidities.

She serves as Editor-in-Chief for StatPearls Pediatrics and Obesity Medicine, has authored multiple scholarly articles and newsletters, and is the lead author of the first-ever peer-reviewed Obesity Medicine Board Exam Study Guide – eBook. Known for her unique, personalized approach to nutritional counseling, Dr. Chamarthi integrates prevention-focused, evidence-based strategies with family-centered care to empower children and parents in making sustainable lifestyle changes.

A dedicated member of the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA), the AAP Section on Obesity (SOOb), and the Golden State Obesity Society (GSOS), she is committed to advancing educational opportunities for trainees and frequently lectures on pediatric obesity prevention and management to expand the knowledge base of healthcare providers.

Her mission is to equip pediatricians with the tools and frameworks needed to deliver compassionate, prevention-focused obesity care, expand access within primary care settings, and champion health equity so that every child has the opportunity to thrive.
