
Pediatric Nutrition – An Interdisciplinary Continuing Education Series

The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry (CSPD) is pleased to present a two-part continuing education webinar series focused on pediatric nutrition and its impact on oral and overall health. This series will provide pediatric dental professionals with valuable insights into nutrition-based prevention strategies, dietary guidance for young patients, and the connection between nutrition and dental outcomes. This one-hour live webinar will explore the multifactorial nature of pediatric obesity and provide clinicians with evidence-based tools for early recognition and management in everyday practice. The session will review current epidemiology, pathophysiologic mechanisms, comorbidities, and complications of obesity in children and adolescents. Participants will learn how to apply the 2023 AAP Clinical Practice Guidelines, integrate pharmacotherapy when appropriate, and utilize practical nutrition and behavioral counseling strategies. The course will also address the role of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) on pediatric health.

Speaker Biography
Dr. V. Sushma Chamarthi, MD, FAAP, DABOM is a board-certified pediatrician and Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine at Valley Children’s Healthcare, Fresno, CA. She serves as Chair of the AAP California Chapter 1 Childhood Nutrition and Obesity Prevention Committee and Editor-in-Chief for StatPearls Pediatrics & Obesity Medicine. Dr. Chamarthi’s work focuses on integrating obesity medicine into pediatric primary care, advancing nutrition education, and developing community-based strategies to combat childhood obesity.

Dr. Roger W. Lucas, DDS is a board-certified pediatric dentist and author of More Chocolate, No Cavities: How Diet Can Keep Your Kid Cavity-Free. Drawing on years of experience in pediatric dentistry, Dr. Lucas emphasizes prevention through nutrition and education, empowering parents to understand how diet—not genetics—is the key to lifelong oral health. His practical approach combines evidence-based dental care with real-world parenting insight, helping families make informed choices to keep children cavity-free.
Objectives
