ACT 2021: Legislative Lobbying

Join us for our 2nd workshop covering the AAP-CA advocacy priorities, how you can be involved, and skills to influence policy, including a background on the legislative cycle, overview of reviewing bills, writing letters, how to provide expert opinion to AAP-CA and further lobbying/advocacy.

 

Meet our Speakers

 

Phyllis Agran MD is a pediatrician and professor emeritus (on recall) UC Irvine, Department of Pediatrics, and Institute for Clinical & Translational Research. She founded the Child Injury Prevention Research Unit at UCI focused on translating research into policy, such as the CA Mandatory Child Passenger Restraint Law. She is former member of the Executive Committee, National American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Injury & Violence Prevention (COIVPP) and chairs the AAP-OC COIVPP. She invests in mentoring the next generation of health professionals. Dr. Agran received her BA degree from UC Berkeley, master’s degree in Biology from Boston University, an MPH from Harvard University, and medical degree from UC Irvine.

Karmi Ferguson, MBA has over 30 years’ experience managing professional trade associations in California and Washington states and served as executive director for 12 statewide and regional organizations. Represented the industries of healthcare (physicians, dentists, and environmental health), biotech, community colleges, broadcasting, and real estate finance. Currently serves as Executive Director of the American Academy of Pediatricians, California District.
From 1996 – 1999, served as Executive Director of the California State Commission on the Status of Women, a gubernatorial appointed position.
Served on several public policy councils including CA Office of Women’s Health, CA Women’s Appointment Project, CA Conservation Corps and CA Real Estate Finance Advisory Committee. Experience working with local, state, and federal government agencies including the departments of Public Health, Medical Board, Dental Board & Nursing Board, Food & Drug Administration, Environmental Health, Community College Chancellor’s Office, Conservation Corps, Justice, Real Estate Finance, the State Legislature, and several gubernatorial administrations.
