Jessica (Jessie) Allan, MD, FAAP – Pediatric hospitalist

Dr. Jessie Allan, MD, is a pediatric hospitalist for Palo Alto Medical Foundation and Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. Clinically, Dr. Allan cares for patients in the newborn and intermediate care nurseries, as well as on acute inpatient floors at Stanford Children’s
Hospital. Beyond her clinical roles, Dr. Allan is the chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Hospital Medicine (SOHM), serving over 3,000 pediatric hospitalists. She is most passionate about workforce diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and has published on the presence of gender bias and underrepresentation of women in medicine. Dr. Allan serves on the Steering Committee of the non-profit organization Women In Medicine® and is the co-founder and past chair of the SOHM Women in Pediatric Hospital Medicine sub-committee. Her leadership has been recognized with the AAP Collaborative Impact Award, and she is a Women in Medicine #SheForShe nominee. Outside of work, Dr. Allan enjoys running, coaching lacrosse, and proudly serving as the executive assistant to her two very active daughters.

Neel Patel, MD, FAAP – AAP-CA1 President

Dr. Neel Patel has been a member of his chapter since completing training at Children’s Oakland in 2004. Over the years, the AAP has provided him with an abundance of opportunities to both grow as a member and leader. In his early career, he served as a co-chair for the Young Physicians and participated in numerous AAP-led quality improvement projects through QUINN. Since 2020, Dr. Patel has served as the Member-at-Large (MAL) for San Mateo.

The AAP and his chapter have provided an anchor for Dr. Patel as a pediatrician. The AAP supports the careers of pediatricians in many ways, including providing access to CME, quality improvement initiatives, networking opportunities, and support for well-being. This support was particularly evident during the pandemic, and Dr. Patel believes it is difficult to imagine what he would have done without the AAP’s assistance in supporting children and pediatricians over the past three years. He believes this will continue to be true as he moves forward.
