Cannabis Conversations: Protecting Youth Health Through Clinical Practice and Public Policy Partnerships Chapter Chat
Tuesday, December 16, 2025
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Join us for a Chapter Chat on December 16 from 6:30PM to 8PM! exploring how pediatricians can protect youth health amid the rise of high-potency cannabis products, aggressive marketing, and increasing normalization. This webinar will review current trends in youth cannabis use, outline clinical and public-health impacts, and highlight actionable strategies pediatricians can use to support prevention, screening, and early intervention in everyday practice. Participants will also learn how to engage with public-health initiatives—such as Getting It Right From the Start—and partner with the AAP to advance policies that safeguard children and adolescents.
Led by Dr. Lynn Silver (MD, MPH, FAAP), a nationally recognized pediatrician and public-health leader with the Public Health Institute, this session combines clinical guidance with policy insight tailored for today’s pediatric providers. A conversation with Billy Burrough, Chair of the COSUP Committee, will follow, along with time for Q&A
Learning Objectives:
- Summarize current trends in cannabis use, product potency, and marketing that affect children and adolescents—particularly in California’s evolving regulatory environment.
- Discuss the clinical and public health implications of cannabis normalization and use among youth, including opportunities for pediatricians to support prevention, screening, and early intervention.
- Identify ways pediatricians can engage with public health initiatives such as Getting It Right From the Start and partner with the AAP to advance policies that better protect young people from cannabis-related harms.

Meet Our Speakers

Lynn Silver, MD, MPH, FAAP
Dr. Lynn Silver (MD, MPH, FAAP) is a pediatrician and public-health leader currently senior advisor at the Public Health Institute (PHI) and Clinical Professor at UCSF, and recently chair of the California Department of Public Health’s High Potency Cannabis Scientific Committee for a dynamic conversation on how today’s pediatricians can lead the charge in youth cannabis prevention. Drawing on Lynn’s extensive background—serving as a county health officer, New York City assistant health commissioner, researcher, and global public-health advocate—she will provide a practical overview of youth-facing threats from high-potency cannabis products, aggressive marketing, and shifting policies (with a focus on California). Her presentation will be followed by a conversation with Billy Burrough, Chair of the COSUP Committee, and then open up for Q&A. Attendees will leave equipped with clinical- and community-oriented strategies to partner with the AAP and leverage public-health systems to protect adolescents and children during this critical policy moment.
